Tips for Success

*This spider craft is great for fine motor skills. First, your child will get the chance to paint the spider, then tie and spin pipe cleaners, and finally add on the beads. All of these things are awesome for strengthening fine motor skills.

*If you choose to omit beading skills you can skip adding the beads to the pipe cleaners.

*The best beads for this project are ones with larger holes to make it easy for the younger children to get them to stay on. Pipe cleaners make for easier beading practice than string as once the beads are on they don’t typically fall off.

*You will need two different days or time periods for this craft. You will first need to have your children paint the plate and then let it dry before continuing on to the next steps.

*This project also makes for great color recognition skills. You can have little ones match the same colors of beads to the colored pipe cleaners. You could also have older children practice pattern making with the beads on the pipe cleaners.

Materials

  • Standard Paper Plates
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
  • White construction paper
  • Black marker or crayon
  • Pipe cleaners in different colors
  • Beads in different colors
  • Hole punch

Directions:

1. Paint the whole top side of a paper plate with black acrylic paint and let dry.

2. Cut out two quarter sized ovals for the eyes and glue them towards the top of the plate. Fill in each one with a smaller drawn on black circle for the inner eyes.

3. Using a hole punch, punch 4 holes in each side of the paper plate. This is where the legs will go.

4. String a pipe cleaner through each hole and fold the top inch over to meet the other part of the pipe cleaner. Spin them together. Do this with all 8 pipe cleaners.

5. Cut the top 1-2″ of each pipe cleaner to shorten them up a bit for the spiders legs.

6. Match the beads to the same color pipe cleaner. Fill the pipe cleaners with beads or space 7-8 beads of each color onto each pipe cleaner (whichever you desire).
