Winter Hat Craft Tips for Success
- This fun craft is perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners. Depending on the age of children you work with you may need to give a little more directions and assistance.
- Toddlers will need you to pour the paint and let them paint as much of the hat as possible. Direct them to try to fill in all of the white space but know that they might not be able to at this age. Stripes may be hard at this age.
- Preschools and Kindergartners can fill in all of the white space. Kindergartners (and older preschoolers) will be able to follow the direction of painting on stripes if desired.
- One paper plate will make two hats. Cut straight down the middle of the paper plate. Then to give it a more hat-like appearance cut a slight semi-circle curve into the bottom of the hat.
- You can choose to rip white construction paper to create the bottom “fur” of the hat as well as the top “pom pom.” This is the route that is less expensive and uses fewer materials. You can also choose to glue cotton balls to the top and all along the bottom strip to make the fur and pom poms. You may need to use a glue bottle to get them to stay.
- We let our paper plates dry completely before adding on the fur and pom pom parts of the hat. Then we easily glued them on. You can add them when your hat is still wet but this may be a little messier. You may be able to skip the glue and just stick it down onto the wet paint while drying if you do it this way.
- Kids will love being able to make their own hats. You could have them try to make their actual hat, add on stripes, polka dots, stars, a solid color, or any other hat designs they desire.
