If you are looking for information on the Zipadee Zip swaddle transition sleeps sack and are wondering if they are worth purchasing you have come to the right place. Read on for information, tips, and a Zipadee Zip review of this great sleep sack alternative.

As a Mom of 3 children who have all struggled to transition out of their Velcro swaddles, we’ve tried tons of different swaddle transition sleep sacks and the Zipadee Zip has been our favorite so far.

We’ve tried many of the different swaddle transition sleep sacks out on the market. I’ve tried the Merlin Magic suit, the Love to Dream swaddle, the Nested Bean sleep sack, Halo sleep sacks, and more. The Zipadee Zip transition sleep sack is my favorite of all of these.

The majority of the information in this review is written about the classic fleece version of the Zipadee Zip sleep sacks. There are many different versions of this sleep sack but this is the one we’ve used and found the most luck with. Keep in mind that all babies are different and that what works with one baby may not always work with others.

Why use a Zipadee Zip?

Zipadee Zips are used when your baby is currently sleeping using a traditional Velcro swaddle and begins to show signs of rolling or breaking out of the Velcro swaddles at night.

We first turned to using a Zipadee Zip sleep sack when our little one was about 3 months old. She had started to show signs of rolling over and it was no longer safe to use the traditional arms in Velcro swaddles like we were using.

We started the transition out of the Halo Velcro swaddles by trying one arm out and she constantly woke herself up with it. We stayed consistent and eventually moved onto two arms out but she was sleeping much shorter stretches and not falling back asleep as easily.

We tried other sleep sacks including the Love to Dream (which we had started using at naps at a younger age), the Merlin Magin (we have friends who swear by these), and more. None of the sleep sacks that we tried elongated our little one’s sleep time and she was consistently waking up every hour to two hours.

As tired parents, we were willing to buy anything and everything to get her to sleep better. We finally caved and purchased the Zipadee Zip sleep sack. Our only regret is not buying it sooner.

For us it wasn’t an immediate magic transition. It took a few days of consistently using the swaddle for her to finally  start sleeping better. It came progressively in longer and longer chunks. But we do attribute this sleep sack to her finally getting it down.

She continued to use this sleep sack and we felt safe with her rolling over in it since she still had access to her hands and could push herself up in it if needed. We continued to use these sleep sacks until the summer when we transitioned to a more traditional sleep sack like the Carters ones with arms or the Halo one without arms.

The best part about this sleep sack is that you can use it as long as your baby needs it. Unlike other swaddle transition sleep sacks, you can use these ones until your baby becomes a toddler. They have bigger sizes and are always going to be a safe choice no matter how old your baby is.

*The company also offers more traditional sleep sacks with Velcro as well as special pajamas for toddlers as well.

Zipadee Zip Features

The Zipadee Zip sleep sack is a nontraditional sleep sack. It is a sleep sack meant to help your baby transition out of the standard sleep sack.

The Zipadee Zip sleep sack has a unique starfish shape to help your little ones with their Moro startle reflex.

It has a zipper that goes from the top to the bottom through the middle of the sleep sack. Your baby’s arms go into the top area of the sleep sack and their legs go down into the bottom parts of the star shape. It is tighter in the middle section to help your baby feel snug and secure.

You can purchase a separate Velcro band called a snuggle strap for underneath the arms to keep the sleep sack from riding up and make it seem more snug on your little ones.

The Zipadee Zip classic sleep sacks come in many different patterns, materials, and sizes. There are five different sizes available (3 months all the way up to 3T) and tons of colors and patterns.

They come in different TOG weights and your little one just wears their pajamas or a typical onesie underneath depending on which weight you purchase and what the temperature in your baby’s room is.

Is the Zipadee Zip safe?

The company sleeping baby shares that their sleepsacks are very safe and a great alternative for when your baby does start rolling.

Their unique design makes it so you baby is able to roll over from front to back and back to front and sleep on their stomach safely while still having access to their hands.

Your baby will be able to use their arms in the sleepsack to lift their head up and turn their bodies if necessary.

While some reviews have mentioned parents finding that the sleepsack can ride up slightly at night, sleeping baby says this isn’t a big issue. If you are worried about it you can purchase the snuggle strap to help put your mind at ease or put your little one’s sleepsack on backwards to prevent the zipper from bunching up near their face.

They are hip friendly and allow plenty of room for your baby to move and grow in each size.

How Many Zipadee Zip sleep sacks do you need?

When ordering the Zipadee Zip sleep sacks I would start by ordering just one. This way you can make sure that they are going to work for your baby and that your baby responds well and sleeps better in them.

If you have good success after you receive your first sleep sack then I would definitely order at least one and maybe even two more. This depends on how often you do laundry.

We had two that we rotated through. Because they were worn on top of pajamas we could usually use one for a few nights before we felt it needed washing after getting spit up on or dirty in the night.

This may also depend on if your baby leaks through diapers or spits up a lot. If this is the case I would order a few additional ones so you don’t have to do the laundry as often.

Luckily the Zipadee Zip’s sizing covers a large range of sizes so we only needed to buy one additional size once our baby grew out of them before we were ready to go without.

Zipadee Zip Pros

  • Helps with the Moro reflex
  • Allows baby to sleep better
  • Various sizes and colors
  • The weight range of each sleep sack is large so it fits longer
  • Encourages safe sleep
  • Allows baby to lift head & roll over
  • Great for transitioning from a traditional velcro swaddle
  • Zipper down the middle to get on and off easily

Zipadee Zip Cons

  • Fabric may ride up slightly in the middle of the night (putting sleepsack on backward or getting the snuggle strap fixes this)
  • Zipper only goes one way which makes for harder diaper changes
  • Baby’s hands are covered if they self-soothe by sucking thumb

What Size Zipadeezip Should I Purchase?

You should purchase your baby’s Zipadee Zip swaddle based on their weight and height. Use the following information to help guide you on the correct size.

*If you purchase a size and you find it doesn’t fit right you can always return it and purchase a new size. However, if you follow the below sizing guide you hopefully shouldn’t have this problem.

  • Extra Small – 8-13 lbs, up to 26 inches
  • Small – 12-19 lbs, up to 28 inches
  • Medium – 19-26 lbs, up to 36 inches
  • Large – 26-34 lbs, up to 39 inches
  • Extra Large – 34 lbs+, 39 inches+

When Can you Stop Using a Zipadee Zip Sleep Sack?

You can use a zipadee zip sleep sack as long as your child needs and until they grow out of the largest size. Zipadee zip has sleep sack sizes all the way up to 2T-3T size. You can choose when your baby or toddler seems ready to go without their zipadee-zip sleepsack or swaddle.

Is the Zipadee Zip Worth the Price?

In my opinion, the Zipadee Zip is 100% worth the price. It helped us with our sleepless nights when our baby was transitioning from a Velcro swaddle and only took around 3 nights to see the benefits.

After trying out three other popular swaddle transition items we purchased this option and it worked the best of all of them. We regretted the fact that we didn’t purchase this one sooner.

In my opinion, this is a must-have for tired Moms and it is definitely worth a try if your baby is breaking out of their Velcro swaddle or rolling over and can’t be swaddled anymore.

While it isn’t a necessity, if you are worried about the fabric riding up simply put the sleep sack on backwards or purchase the extra strap. The strap also helps your baby feel more snug and secure so it is a great addition if you can afford it.
