DIY Christmas Ornament Craft for Kids Tips for Success

When making this fun Christmas ornament craft there are a few different ways to make it and materials you can choose to use. Check out some tips to help with the process below:

  • Use a large bowl as a tracer for the round part of the Christmas ornament. Your ornament will be the same size as the bowl you choose so if you want a smaller ornament to hang on a tree use a smaller bowl and if you want a larger ornament to use as a decoration around the home use a bigger bowl.
  • If making this craft with older children they can cut the colored paper strips on their own. If making it with smaller children you may want to prep by cutting out tons of paper strips in different colors and different widths for them to choose from.
  • This craft looks best if you use multiple colors of paper strips. Try not to glue paper strips next to each other if they are the same color.
  • You can cut out straight-edged paper strips as well as zig-zag paper strips. You can also use zig-zag craft scissors to create fun paper strips with different edges.
  • Some common embellishment ideas would be gems, foam stickers, stickers, glitter, glitter glue, sequins, colored paper pieces, and more. The examples shown in the photo are just colored paper and different gems.
  • Once completed you can choose to use a hole punch on the top of the ornament and add a string to hang it on a Christmas tree. You can also skip this part and tape it up or hang it up on a wall somewhere in the home.

  2. Cut out and prep your paper strips of all different colors and widths. Cut out strips that are 1″ or less in width. Cut out straight edge strips and zig zag edge strips.
Paper Strip DIY Ornament Step
  1. Starting at the bottom of your ornament glue paper strips all the way up being sure to alternative colors and use different color options. Glue strips until you’ve covered up all the white space desired (in most cases all of the white space).
  2. Flip your paper over to the backside so you can see the white circle with the paper strips hanging off of the ends. Cut the ends of the paper strips off so they are even with the white circle.
Ornament Craft Steps
  1. Cut out a small yellow rectangle and glue it to the back of the very top of your circle sticking off of the top to create the hook cap part of the ornament. Draw vertical lines from the top to the bottom of the glued-on small rectangle to make it look more like the hook cap.
  2. Add on additional embellishments. Glue on gems or sequins, stick on stickers, draw on pictures or symbols, and more. Add on any fun decorations of your choice.
  3. Optional: Using a hole punch punch a hole in the middle of the ornament cap and add string or yarn to create a way to hang your ornament on a Christmas tree.
