Tips for Success:

*When making this fun Earth Day man craft, you will need to first paint the background of the plate blue and let it dry. We find acrylic paint works best for this as it is brightest. You should paint the bottom/back side of the paper plate.

*You will need green tissue paper for the land on the earth. You should use a glue stick or a glue bottle to glue down the tissue paper once the paint is dry. Either will work. Be sure to cut the tissue paper into small squares and glue them in large green chunks all around the plate.

*Younger children will need some assistance with different steps of this craft. They may need help cutting out the tissue paper, gluing the paper down so it actually looks like land (you could even outline with a pencil where they should glue down), zig-zag folding, and cutting and gluing the details in place.

*Older children may be able to do most of these things on their own. You can give them an example to copy or you can just walk them through each step when they are done with the previous one. My 7 year old can do it pretty independently once shown the example, but my 5 year old really needed walking through it.

*You can connect this fun craft with a lesson on the Earth and Earth Day. Talk about keeping our Earth clean and things we can do to help. Talk about things that kids can actually do themselves, like turn off lights, preserve water, pick up garbage, etc. Read fun Earth Day books and talk about what the Earth looks like. Earth Day is April 22nd, but really, you can talk about helping and loving the Earth any day of the year!
