Gluten and Dairy Free Blueberry Buttermilk Waffles

Jul 16, 2021

These gluten and dairy free buttermilk waffles are so fluffy, delicious, and easy to throw together for a quick morning breakfast. This recipe is a great size for a family of 4+ or can be cut in half if you are looking to feed a smaller crew.

These easy dairy free waffles are made with homemade dairy-free buttermilk, fresh blueberries (if you choose to add them) a gluten-free flour blend, and more. All of the ingredients are ones that we always have on hand at our house (aside from maybe the blueberries) and they are very simple to make.

These waffles taste great with a dollop of dairy free cream and extra blueberries, syrup, butter, or a blueberry sauce on top. They can be served in many different ways and are sure to please even the pickiest eaters (even my picky toddler went back for seconds).

Gluten and Dairy Free Waffles Variations

* These waffles can be made with or without the blueberries. If you choose to make them without the blueberries you just need to omit them from the recipe. You do not need to make any other changes to the batter. They will still turn out delicious and fluffy!

* To make gluten and dairy free blueberry lemon waffles, simply follow the directions to make the batter but add 1 tbsp lemon juice when combining the wet ingredients. Then cook the waffles as directed.

*To make gluten and dairy free chocolate chip waffles, simply substitute the blueberries in the recipe with dairy-free mini chocolate chips (we’ve had great success with the Enjoy Life brand).

How Can I Make Dairy Free Buttermilk?

Our favorite way to make dairy-free buttermilk is to mix 1 tbsp lemon juice with 1 tsp dairy-free milk (we usually use almond milk) and let sit for 5 minutes. The milk will curdle and be ready to use.

  • 2 tbsp sugar

  2. Beat eggs and combine with dairy-free buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla. Mix together.
  3. In a separate bowl mix together gluten-free flour, cornstarch, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  4. Slowly pour the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Beat by hand until only small lumps remain.
  5. Add in blueberries and stir to distribute through the batter.
  6. Spray the waffle iron with cooking spray and pour the prepared batter in. Cook until the waffle is golden brown or the waffle iron indicates it is ready.
