Every year at the start of the school year, one of the first books I would read to my Kindergarten class was the classic children’s book, “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.” It is a catchy book that introduces the letters in a fun way. It is perfect for letter and sound recognition and practice.
There are tons of online videos/songs and readings of it (check out one of my favorites here) and lots of fun activities you can do with it.
We’ve done a felt palm tree with felt letters, a magnetic palm tree on a cookie sheet with magnetic letters (or on the fridge or garage door if at home), Chicka Chicka Boom Boom themed sensory bins with a green sensory base and resin letters, and more.
There are so many great ideas for ways to practice letter recognition that involve this fun book and this cute craft is just one of them.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Craft Tips
*When making this fun craft with younger children you can prep the pieces that need cutting out ahead of time and have them do the painting, gluing, and stickers. Older children can cut, fold, glue, and do the sticker jobs.
*For this craft, you will need to use two paper plates. I would suggest the smaller paper plates so they fit better on a piece of construction paper. You can use the larger ones if necessary but you will need a larger background piece of paper.
*Once finished painting be sure to let your tree leaves dry completely. This will help ensure that the stickers stick and don’t keep falling off.
*You can glue on a straight piece of paper for the tree trunk or you can instruct children on how to accordion fold the piece of paper to give the tree trunk a little more structure. Accordion folding is shown in the photos. It is slightly more difficult for younger children so choose which trunk you think would work best for whatever age children you are working with.
*Letter stickers look great on the finished project but if you do not have them available you can also use different colors of markers or pens to write the letters on the project. Younger children who are still learning may not know how to write their letters so this option may be difficult for them.
Paper Plate Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Craft for Kids
Materials:
- 2 paper plates (smaller sized)
- Green washable paint
- Paintbrush
- Optional zig zag scissors
- Blue construction paper
- Brown construction paper
- Letter stickers OR a pen/markers
Directions:
- Paint the back sides of your two paper plates green and let them dry.
- Cut the two paper plates in half so you have four halves for the leaves. Use zigzag scissors to make the leaf pattern more realistic if desired.
- Cut out a 3 inch by 8 inch rectangle from brown paper (anywhere around this size but does not have to be exact). Accordion fold it all the way down.
- Glue the bottom of the brown accordion fold to the middle of the bottom of your blue piece of construction paper (this will be the background sky). Put a line of glue on the top line of the accordion folded paper and push it down to glue it to the middle of the blue paper.
- Lay the paper plate leaves down on the top of the tree trunk. Overlap them slightly and glue them down to look like tree leaves (see the photo for assistance on how to lay them down).
- Finish your project by adding letter stickers all up and down the tree trunk. You can also write or draw the letters if you do not have letter stickers available.
