Spring Bird’s Nest Craft Tips for Success

*You will need to make sure that you have paper plates at home for this project as well as scissors, glue, and construction paper. You will also need brown paint, googly eyes, feathers, Easter grass (or you could use normal grass for a more recycled style project), and optional egg stickers if going with an Easter themed craft (or you can draw your own).

*We made this craft Easter themed as Easter is coming up in a few weeks and we thought it would be the cutest Easter craft. However, there are also directions to make it a spring-themed craft that you can complete after learning all about birds or spring in general.

*When making this craft you can use any paper plates desired. You will need to paint the plate and let it dry before going on to the next steps.

*You can make your bird any different color to go with this fun craft. We made a blue bird but a red cardinal bird or a brown with an orange belly for a robin would look great too.

*Once you have all the rest of the details complete you can use a glue stick to add on Easter grass to make it look more like an authentic bird’s nest. If you do not have Easter grass available you can also use grass, straw, string, and more.

Some other ideas to include while learning about birds with young children include reading books on birds and spring animals, enjoying a bird-themed snack, making a bird feeder, and going on a nature hunt to find all of the objects a bird may use and making a nest with them.

Materials

  • White Paper Plate
  • Paint
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick/Tape
  • Construction Paper
  • Googly Eyes
  • Feathers
  • Egg Stickers (optional)

How to Make a Spring Bird’s Nest Activity:

  1. Begin by cutting the paper plate in half. Paint the back of one of the halves completely brown for the bird’s nest. Set aside to dry.
  2. Draw and cut out two circles on a paper of choice, one smaller one for the bird’s head and one larger one for the bird’s body.
  3. Cut out a small orange triangle for a beak and glue it to the bird’s head along with the two googly eyes.
  4. Glue the bird’s head circle onto the body.
  5. Glue (or tape) two feathers onto the back of the bird’s body circle so that they are sticking out to the side.
  6. Center the bird’s body on the top of the plate nest when it is dry and glue (or tape) down.
  7. Draw and cut out 3-4 small eggs and glue them underneath the bird onto the nest. If you are going for an Easter themed project you can use Easter egg stickers here instead.
  8. Cut Easter grass into smaller pieces if using (or prepare grass from outside). Spread glue all over the outside edges and bottom of the paper plate. Stick grass to glue.
  9. Add any other details you’d like to the birds. You could draw on wings, add feet, etc…if desired. Then your bird is complete!
