What is a shapes chart?

A shapes chart is a chart that includes the most basic shapes to help children learn. Each shape is portrayed with a picture and a label that children can look at. Some of the most basic shapes you might find on a shapes chart includes square, triangle, rectangle, circle, oval, hexagon, and more.

A shapes chart can be printed out and hung around the home or classroom for children to see when they are working on schoolwork and learning. It can be put into a morning work binder, and the shapes can be looked at and repeated with a teacher or adult daily. It can also be printed out in black and white and used as a coloring sheet. There are tons of options for learning with a shapes chart.

What Are Some Ways to Use a Shapes Chart?

As a previous Wisconsin Kindergarten teacher, we followed the Wisconsin state math standards. One of these standards included learning the basic geometrical shapes. This shapes chart resource is a great way to help with this. Check out some of my favorite recommendations for ways to use these shape charts:

  • Print the shapes chart out large and/or print a copy for each child. Say the shape’s name and point to each shape while children find it on their chart and repeat the name. Do this with all of the shapes daily/weekly to help children recognize the shapes faster.
  • Give children a paper cut out of each shape or put them in a bag. Children can stick their hands in the bag and pull out a shape. They can then match it to the shape on their paper.
  • Give children magnatiles or blocks of each shape or put them in a bag. Children can stick their hands in the bag and pull out a shape. They can then match it to the shape on their paper.
  • Give children a real life example of a shape and have them find it and place it on or point it out on their shape chart.
  • Say a shape aloud and see who can race to find it on their shapes chart first.
  • Use the shape chart as a resource for children to look at while drawing shapes on another piece of paper.
  • Print out a copy of the shapes chart and have children walk around the room, checking off each shape that they find in real life.

They are perfect for teaching shapes to preschool and kindergarten-age children. There is also a larger, more detailed version that includes more shapes and is better suited for older children as well.
